| The Apostil |
| Staring the 16th of March 2001, Romania adhered to the Hague Convention of the 5th of October 1961, therefore: |
| The Romanian authorities competent to apply the apostil are: |
| a) The High Courts for the following documents: |
| documents issued by an authority or an officer of a jurisdiction of the state, including those issued by the Public Ministry, a court clerk or a judiciary executor; |
| notary public documents; |
| official documents, such as: those regarding registration observations, certain date appointment visa and legalizations of signatures, applied on a document under private signature. |
| b) the prefectures, for the administrative documents (only for the original ones) |
| birth certificate, marriage certificate, death certificate, police clearance certificate, education documents, medical certificates, baptism/ religious marriage certificates, attestation certificates for the work experience, professional training certificates for various professions |
| Note: The civil status documents issued before 1996 must be changed with other ones of the new international type. The change is done in the civil status bureau which issued the old ones. |
| The supralegalization |
| For the international recognition purpose, the civil status documents, namely the certificates of birth and death, after they are applied the apostil by the Prefecture, are translated in the language of the country of destination by an authorized translator, including the apostil, after which they are legalized by a notary public, and finally the legalized translation is supralegalized with apostil by the competent High Courts. |

| The Ministry of Justice in Bucharest continues to supralegalize only the documents which will be used in countries which are not members of the Hague Convention.
